We need STEM graduates who want to apply their skills to a creative communications environment. Digital transformation has increased the number of roles and opportunities available to STEM students, with an interest in joining a slightly less conventional creative working environment. The IPA predicts that, by 2020, I in 3 of all graduates employed will be STE(A)M. New job roles are emerging in agencies which benefit from degrees in mathematics, physics, computer science, data science, psychology and anthropology.
Graduate job roles are broadening. As well as traditional roles in account management and account planning, these are now broadening to include roles in data analytics, econometrics, user experience planning, digital strategy, web and app development and real time media planning and buying all of which are available in the AdMission Internship Programme. This year, we are also including the role of creative planner.
Advertising is a reflection of society, and we are keen to increase our representation of the multi-cultural society in which we live and work. Our current intake of BAME graduates reflects the national average at 13%.
We aim to double this percentage in 2016. We want BAME students of all disciplines to enrich our talent pool.
Step has 30 years of experience working with Growth Oriented Businesses (GOBs) and universities and created the market for paid internships in the UK. It is regularly cited by Government and leading employer groups such as the FSB, IoD and CBI as a model of best practice in meeting the talent needs of business and supporting the employability and development needs of students and graduates. Clients include Fever Tree, Telent and Puma. Step has delivered 28,000 placements to date (50% in STEM related disciplines) with 80% of graduate internships leading to permanent jobs.
In 2015 Step consolidated with WEXO, which had previously worked with the IPA on its AdSchool and AdAcademy initiatives. With offices in London and Nottingham, Step has now become the sole internships recruitment partner for the IPA’s Admission internship Programme and is targeting 50 paid STEM and BAME placements across 20 agencies in Summer 2017.
